I recently mentioned to a fellow screenwriter that one of my outlines didn't have a strong B story, and he asked, does a story really need one? What do you all think? Are there examples of successful scripts that don't have a B story?

Can you have one plot for a script? Absolutely but I find that without a B-heart plot, your script will read as more concept heavy and lack emotional hook needed to help make a character empathetic. My questions is are you sure there isn't a B plot. I'm willing to bet that there is one but it is quite subtle.

I agree with you. Often I think I need to have a B plot, but then I am like, hold on, I do have a B plot. But, I notice it does give the viewers a break from the main action.

I think the quick answer is, no. It just needs to be good. That said, a B story usually gives more emotional impact that lifts the A story to greater heights. (Just my opinion). 🙂
